There is a version of Saturday afternoon at the Weserstadion where SC Paderborn 07 walk away with three points and one of the more surprising results of the Bundesliga season. They came close. For sixty minutes they were the better team, the more dangerous team, and the team with a two-goal lead. Then Niclas Füllkrug happened.

The afternoon started badly for Paderborn before it got very good. Stefano Marino picked up a yellow card in the fourth minute — early enough to hang over everything he did afterward — and yet he was the one who opened the scoring at 18', finishing off a move that Steffen Tigges had helped construct. Twelve minutes later, Tigges returned the favor by cutting out the middleman entirely and scoring himself. Two-nil to the visitors at the half, and Werder Bremen's 61% possession had bought them nothing.

Füllkrug Turns It

Werder came out of the break with more urgency, and Bremen's 18 shots on the day tell you they were pushing. The breakthrough came in the 59th minute: Eren Dinkci found Füllkrug, who did what Füllkrug does. Six minutes later, a penalty. Füllkrug again. Two-two, and the Weserstadion was back in it.

El poder de Füllkrug — two goals in six second-half minutes to drag his side level from what looked like a hopeless position. The stats back up just how one-sided the second half felt: Bremen finished with 11 shots on target to Paderborn's four, and the Paderborn goalkeeper was called into action nine times across the full ninety. That the visitors held on at all was its own kind of achievement.

Paderborn's discipline frayed a little as the game wore on — 14 fouls conceded in total, including the one that handed Füllkrug his penalty — but they never truly cracked. Youri Regeer picked up a late yellow for Bremen in the 86th minute, by which point both sides were more interested in keeping what they had than risking losing it.

Verdict

Our pre-match read had Werder Bremen as 55% favorites to win this at home, and the final scoreline will feel like a mild disappointment on their end. They had the territory, the chances, and the crowd. What they didn't have was a first half, and in this league you can't spot a team two goals and expect to coast back.

For Paderborn, a point away from home after leading 2-0 will sting. Their form coming in — two wins, two losses and a draw in the last five — suggested a side capable of results but not always of seeing them through. Cabal, that is exactly what happened here. The question now is whether Bremen can sharpen their first-half performances, because relying on Füllkrug to bail them out from two goals down is not a plan you can run all season.
