Nobody gave Werder Bremen much of a chance here. Our pre-match read made RB Leipzig the favorite at 52%, and one look at Bremen's recent form — one win in their last five — made that feel generous to the home side. Then Eren Dinkci scored in the fourth minute and the whole script got thrown out.

Chuki found him early, and Bremen had their lead before Leipzig had even settled. It was the kind of start that forces a heavily favored away side to recalibrate, and Leipzig never quite managed it.

The Possession Trap

The numbers from this one are almost absurd. Leipzig finished with 70.8% possession, 689 passes at 90% accuracy, 19 shots. Bremen had 287 passes, 29.2% of the ball, and two corners all night. By almost every territorial measure, this was a Leipzig performance. The scoreline just refused to cooperate.

Bremen's goalkeeper made three saves. Leipzig's made four. Those numbers don't scream a 3-1 result for the home side, but Bremen were ruthless with what they got: 12 shots, seven on target. Leipzig generated the volume; Bremen generated the goals.

Chuki picked up a yellow card in the 23rd minute — the only booking of the night — but stayed on and kept influencing things.

Füllkrug and Grüll Finish It

For most of the second half, Leipzig pushed. Seven corners, sustained pressure, the ball constantly in Bremen territory. And then, on 68 minutes, Marco Grüll found Niclas Füllkrug, who headed home to make it 2-0. Cabal, that was the moment any Leipzig comeback became a serious ask.

Grüll got his own goal twelve minutes later — 3-0, and the Weserstadion could breathe. Qué noche para Bremen.

Ridle Baku pulled one back with a header deep in stoppage time, assisted by Andrija Maksimovic, but it was consolation and nothing more. Leipzig had run out of time and, more importantly, out of the clinical edge that the scoreline demanded.

Verdict

Bremen will feel this is the result that steadies a shaky stretch. Four losses in their last five coming in, and they produce this — against a Leipzig side that outshot them by seven, outpassed them by more than 400, and controlled the game for long stretches. The defensive shape held when it needed to, and the finishing was sharp.

For Leipzig, the question now is whether the underlying numbers offer any real comfort. They dominated possession and created the chances on paper, but allowed a goal inside four minutes and were picked apart on the counter three times. Nineteen shots, five on target, one goal from a corner in the 95th minute. That's a performance that will sting regardless of how the stats read.
