Villarreal came into this one carrying a form line that read four straight defeats, with only a draw to show for their last five. Real Betis, meanwhile, had won four of five. The gap in momentum was real, and it showed in the most damaging six-minute stretch of the afternoon.

None of that looked inevitable in the first half-hour. Villarreal were comfortable on the ball — they'd finish with 61.8% possession and 623 passes — and it was Renato Veiga who created the opening, threading through for Gerard Moreno to finish in the 29th minute. A veteran goal, calm and well-placed.

But Betis were never rattled. They had 26 shots on the day to Villarreal's 14, and even when the home side was controlling territory, the visitors were generating the more dangerous looks. That volume eventually told.

Cucho Hernández leveled things in the 39th minute, and before Villarreal could reset, Natan put Betis ahead in the 43rd. Two goals in six minutes, both without a credited assist — direct, purposeful, and perfectly timed to send the home side into the break behind. Qué manera de voltear el partido.

The Second Half That Wasn't

Villarreal threw everything at it after the break. Eight shots on target, seven corners, five offsides — the attacking intent was there, but so were Betis's ten saves across the full 90. Villarreal were the more organized side with the ball; Betis were the more dangerous side without it.

Renato Veiga picked up a yellow card in the 84th minute, but by then the match had already been decided. There were no red cards, no dramatic late collapses — just a Betis side that defended their lead with the composure of a team that knew exactly what they were doing.

Our pre-match read made Villarreal the favorite at 49% — and on paper, with their possession and shot totals, you could see why. But football doesn't run on possession statistics, and Betis were sharper when it counted.

For Villarreal, the numbers are getting harder to ignore: five games without a win, and a home loss to a side that spent most of the afternoon chasing the ball. The question now is whether this is a rough patch or something more structural — because the effort and the ball retention are there, but the results aren't following.

Betis, cabal, look like the real deal this season. Four wins from five, and they've just beaten a side that dominated them for long stretches. That's the mark of a team with genuine belief.
