Veneziavs
LecceThere are nights when the numbers lie, and Sunday at the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo was one of them. Venezia had 71 percent of the ball, 19 shots, and a goalkeeper who barely broke a sweat. Lecce had 28.9 percent possession, three yellow cards before the hour mark, and two goals. You already know who went home happy.
Our pre-match read made Venezia the favorite at 52 percent, and on the surface of the stats sheet that looked prescient right up until you checked the scoreline. Lecce simply refused to cooperate.
The Goal That Changed Everything
The first half was exactly what you'd expect from those possession numbers: Venezia probing, Lecce sitting deep and fouling when they had to, Kialonda Gaspar picking up a yellow as early as the third minute to signal the visitors' intentions. Lecce's goalkeeper was busy — six saves on the night — and Venezia's 631 passes found the final third often enough, but nothing stuck.
Then came the 46th minute, and with it the sucker punch. Lassana Coulibaly found Olaf Gorter, and Gorter finished. One moment of quality, right on the stroke of halftime, and the whole shape of the evening shifted. Venezia had done the hard work for 45 minutes and had nothing to show for it. Lecce had barely existed as an attacking force and were ahead.
Qué gol tan oportuno — that's the cruelest kind.
Lecce Hold the Line
The second half brought more of the same from Venezia: possession, shots, corners — seven on target across the full 90, with Lecce's goalkeeper repeatedly keeping them out. Lecce kept collecting bookings too. Oumar Ngom went into the book on 59 minutes, Danilo Veiga on 71. Three yellows for the away side, a team walking a disciplinary tightrope.
But they held. And then, on 80 minutes, Tiago Gabriel made it two with a header, and cabal, that was the moment the match died as a contest. Venezia's Matteo Dagasso picked up a yellow eight minutes later — a late foul from a team that had run out of ideas — and the final whistle confirmed what Gabriel's header had already decided.
Verdict
The raw stats will make Venezia feel hard done by: 19 shots to Lecce's 12, a pass accuracy of 90 percent against Lecce's 70, and a goalkeeper who made only two saves all night. But football rewards goals, not possession, and Lecce were ruthless in converting the little they created.
The question now is whether Venezia can translate that volume of chances into actual goals — because a team that creates this much and finishes this poorly will keep dropping points they feel they deserved. Lecce, meanwhile, look genuinely dangerous on the counter, and with this kind of defensive discipline, they won't be an easy afternoon for anyone.
