There was a lot of football played at Mestalla on Saturday. Not much of it led anywhere.

Valencia and Athletic Club ground out a 0-0 draw that will satisfy neither side completely, though both can find reasons to take something from it. Our pre-match read had Athletic Club as the likeliest winner at 41%, and they had the ball enough to justify that billing — 63% possession, 567 passes completed at 90% accuracy — but converting territory into goals was another matter entirely.

Athletic were the better team on paper. Six corners to Valencia's two, nine shots to sixteen — though that shooting figure is the one that actually tells the story of the night. Valencia got off sixteen shots and put only three on target. Athletic managed nine and hit the frame twice. Neither goalkeeper was seriously tested: the Valencia keeper made one save, his opposite number three. For a match this possession-heavy, it was surprisingly toothless in the final third.

Yellow All Over

If the goals weren't coming, the cards were. Six bookings across ninety minutes kept the referee busy and gave the game a fractious edge that the scoreline doesn't quite capture.

Dani Raba picked up the first, a yellow for Valencia in the 19th minute. Then Athletic started collecting them in bunches — Aymeric Laporte went into the book in the 38th, Beñat Gerenabarrena followed four minutes later just before the break, and Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta added a third for the visitors in the 57th. That's three Athletic Club yellows in under twenty minutes of game time, and it spoke to a team that was getting frustrated with its own inability to break through.

Valencia closed out the card tally late. Pepelu was booked in the 87th minute, then César Tárrega in the 90th — that last one arriving as the tension of a draw neither side fully wanted started showing.

A Point Each, For What It's Worth

Valencia came in with a form run of DDLWL, and this is their third draw in five. Athletic's recent form read DDDWW, so they had the momentum — two wins on the bounce — and looked capable of extending it. Instead they ran into a Valencia side that was disciplined enough to absorb pressure and desperate enough to swing for a winner on the break. Sixteen shots from a team with 36.7% possession says they were throwing bodies forward every time they got the ball.

Qué partido tan frustrante for the Mestalla crowd. Valencia's passing accuracy sat at just 80%, which meant a lot of those sixteen shots came off scrappy, direct moves rather than anything constructed. It was chaotic in the best way for neutral observers and probably maddening if you were wearing che colors.

Athletic will feel they left two points behind. Valencia, given where they've been, might quietly take one. The question now is whether Athletic can refocus quickly — three draws in their last five suggests a team that keeps finding ways to not quite win.
