There is a particular kind of defeat that stings the most — the one where you do everything right on paper and still lose. Sunderland had 62 percent of the ball, seven corners, 496 passes, and a man advantage for more than half an hour. Brighton left the Stadium of Light with a 2-0 win.

Our pre-match read made Brighton the favorite at 41 percent, and they delivered.

The Goal That Set the Tone

The first half was mostly Sunderland's in terms of territory, though neither side was creating anything clean. Brighton sat back, absorbed it, and waited. It took until the 53rd minute for the game to crack open — and it was the visitors who cracked it. Pascal Gross found Maxim De Cuyper, who finished to put Brighton ahead against the run of play. Classic sucker-punch stuff.

Four minutes later, the match flipped again. Pascal Struijk picked up a red card in the 57th minute, and suddenly Sunderland had a numerical advantage to go with their territorial one. The crowd at a near-capacity Stadium of Light sensed it. Qué momento para presionar — 33 minutes plus stoppage time, a man up, at home.

It never came together.

Sunderland managed only three shots on target across the entire match. Brighton's goalkeeper made two saves — which tells you most of what you need to know about the quality of what Sunderland were producing. Twelve shots, but only three that the keeper even had to deal with. The five offsides didn't help either; the hosts kept getting caught in the trap.

Ten Men, No Problem

Brighton, to their credit, didn't just park it. Ten men, chasing the game defensively, and they still matched Sunderland's 13 shots on the night with 13 of their own. They were sharper in the moments that mattered.

The question going into the final minutes was whether Sunderland could find the equalizer that would at least give them something. They couldn't. And then, in the third minute of added time, Georginio Rutter laid it off for Jaouen Hadjam to make it 2-0 and kill any remaining doubt.

El chispudo de Hadjam, arriving exactly when Brighton needed a moment of composure.

Verdict

Sunderland will feel the pain of this one for a while. Their form coming in read LWLWD — inconsistent, but with signs of life. This was the kind of game they needed to take, and they had every opportunity to do it. A man advantage, home support, more than half the ball. None of it was enough.

Brighton, meanwhile, look like a side that knows how to win ugly. Their form reads WWWDL, and this result keeps them moving in the right direction. Cabal, winning away from home with ten men and 37 percent possession is not an accident — that is a team with a clear idea of what they're doing.

The question now for Sunderland is whether this is a pattern or a blip. Based on tonight, it looked like a pattern.
