Sporting CPvs
GalatasarayThere is a particular cruelty to going ahead through an own goal. You get the lead, sure, but you haven't earned it — and if the home side is good enough, they will remind you of that. Galatasaray found out the hard way at Estádio José Alvalade on Wednesday, as Sporting CP turned an awkward opener into a comfortable Champions League victory.
Gonçalo Inácio put the ball into his own net in the fifth minute, and for a moment the 44,054 inside the ground must have felt the evening tilt the wrong way. It didn't last long. Sporting, despite sitting on just 38 percent of the ball across the ninety, were the sharper side in the moments that counted. Geny Catamo leveled in the 27th minute, and from there Galatasaray's grip on the match — they'd finish with 62 percent possession and 580 passes — started to look like the kind of control that doesn't actually threaten anyone.
Our pre-match read made Sporting the favorite at 58 percent, and that is exactly how it played out.
The Second Half Settled It
Galatasaray came out of the break with a yellow card for Eren Elmali in the 52nd minute and not much else. Five minutes later, Luis Suárez stepped up and converted from the spot to put Sporting ahead. Suárez had picked up a booking of his own just before halftime — the kind of detail that makes a penalty conversion feel a little sweeter — and he didn't miss.
Then came the goal that really killed the contest. Rodrigo Zalazar made it 3-1 in the 63rd minute, and en qué clavo se encontraba Galatasaray — three goals down, still moving the ball nicely, but with nothing to show for it.
The numbers tell the story cleanly enough. Galatasaray had ten shots to Sporting's eight, but only three on target. Sporting put five of their eight on frame. The visitors' 90 percent pass accuracy looked pristine on paper and meant very little in practice.
Sergi Altimira's yellow in the 22nd minute was the only real flash of danger in a first half that Sporting controlled without ever needing to dominate. Deniz Gül and Ismail Jakobs collected late bookings for Galatasaray — the kind of cards that come when a team is frustrated and running out of road.
Galatasaray arrived in Lisbon having lost just once in their last five, and they will feel this one. The possession stats will offer cold comfort. Sporting, meanwhile, extend a run that reads four wins and a draw across their last five — and they did it against a side with real European pedigree, on a night when their own center back handed the visitors a gift inside five minutes.
The question now is whether Sporting can keep this kind of efficiency going in the group stage. Eight shots, three goals, a clean defensive sheet after conceding from an own goal — that is a team that knows how to win ugly, and that matters in this competition.
