SC Paderborn 07 had the ball for most of the afternoon. They had the corners, the passes, the territory. What they didn't have was a goal, and in the Bundesliga that's the only number that settles arguments.

SC Freiburg came to Home Deluxe Arena on September 5th and did what well-organized sides do: they absorbed, they waited, and then Maximilian Eggestein made it count. His 26th-minute finish was the only goal of the game, and it was enough.

One Moment, One Win

Paderborn had been the busier side leading up to the goal, moving the ball with purpose through midfield. But Freiburg's defensive shape was never really broken. When Eggestein struck in the 26th minute, it came against the run of play in the way that always stings the most — the team doing less, suddenly ahead.

From there, Freiburg were content to sit on their lead. With 41.1% possession and 362 passes to Paderborn's 531, they were clearly not interested in dominating the ball. They didn't need to be. They ended with 16 shots to Paderborn's 14, and five on target to Paderborn's three — more dangerous, as it turned out, despite touching the ball less.

Paderborn's keeper made four saves. Freiburg's made three. The margins were fine, but the scoreline wasn't.

Cards and Frustration

The match got edgy as it went on. Laurin Curda picked up a yellow for Paderborn in the 38th minute, then Yuito Suzuki was booked for Freiburg just before halftime in the 43rd. Jano Horst added another for the hosts right after the break, in the 48th, which told you something about the mood in the Paderborn dressing room at the interval.

Freiburg weren't clean either — Philipp Lienhart went into the book in the 56th minute, followed by Yannick Engelhardt three minutes later. Five yellows across the two sides in a roughly 20-minute window. Paderborn were pushing, Freiburg were holding on with their elbows when necessary. Tjark Scheller picked up a late yellow in stoppage time, though by then the game was long settled.

Qué partido tan tenso in the second half — but Freiburg never looked like they were going to concede.

Verdict

Our pre-match read made SC Freiburg the favorite at 49%, and cabal, that's how it played out. They came in with four straight wins before a loss in their last outing, and this was the kind of professional road result that good squads collect — not pretty, not dominant, just effective.

For Paderborn, the frustration will be real. Nearly 59% of the ball, five corners, 14 shots, and nothing to show for it. Their form heading in wasn't bad — one draw and four wins in their last five — but converting possession into genuine danger remains the question. Three shots on target from 14 attempts is a conversion problem, and it's one they'll need to fix.

Freiburg, meanwhile, just keep picking up points on the road. That's a good habit to have.
