SC Freiburgvs
Borussia M'gladbachSC Freiburg didn't just win on Saturday at the Europa-Park Stadion — they dismantled Borussia Mönchengladbach so thoroughly that the scoreline almost undersells it. Five goals, zero conceded, 60.8 percent of the ball and a 90 percent pass accuracy. Gladbach arrived having lost three of their last five; they left looking like a side that needs to figure out a few things in a hurry.
The match had a nasty undercurrent early. Tim Kleindienst picked up a yellow in the 13th minute, Kevin Diks followed him into the book a minute later, and the visitors were already playing on a short leash before the first goal even arrived.
Freiburg broke through in the 23rd minute. Derry Scherhant delivered, Yannick Engelhardt got his head on it, and suddenly the home side had exactly the platform they needed. Six minutes later it was 2-0: Matthias Ginter set up Igor Matanovic, who finished cleanly to double the lead before halftime. Qué tarde tan larga le esperaba a Gladbach.
The Red Card Changed Everything — And Everything Was Already Going Wrong
Whatever Gladbach's halftime talk looked like, it didn't matter. Kleindienst — already on a booking — was shown a straight red in the 52nd minute, and Freiburg had 38 minutes to work against ten men with a two-goal cushion. The match was effectively finished as a contest from that point.
The floodgates opened in the final quarter-hour. Jordy Makengo picked out Matanovic in the 77th minute for his second of the night, a header. Two minutes later, Ginter assisted again — this time for Engelhardt's second, making it 4-0. Maximilian Eggestein wrapped things up in the 86th with a fifth, unassisted, because why not at that point.
Freiburg's nine shots on target against zero saves needed tells you everything about how the second half went. Gladbach offered nothing going forward and couldn't hold their shape defensively once a man down.
Our pre-match read made Freiburg the favorite at 55 percent, and this one wasn't remotely close — they validated that read and then some.
Where This Leaves Both Sides
Freiburg are now five wins from five in the Bundesliga. That's a perfect record and this was their most emphatic statement yet. The depth showed too: Ginter chipping in with two assists from the back, Makengo involved in the third, Eggestein getting on the scoresheet late. This isn't a one-man team.
Gladbach, on the other hand, will feel the weight of this one for a while. The red card from Kleindienst was the decisive tactical blow, sure, but they were already down two at the break and being outplayed. En qué clavo se encuentran — a patchy run of form, a suspended striker now, and a -5 goal difference from this game alone. The questions around their defensive organization and discipline won't go away after a result like this.
