Milan came to Mapei Stadium as the clear favorite and spent most of the night looking like it. They had the ball, the shots on target, and a goal from Adrien Rabiot to show for it. Then Sassuolo reminded everyone why this league rarely goes to script.

For an hour, the match was tight and a little forgettable. Milan controlled possession — 59 percent by the final whistle — but Sassuolo's goalkeeper was busy enough, finishing with five saves to Milan's three. Neither side found the breakthrough before halftime, though Milan's discipline was already fraying: Pervis Estupiñán was booked in the 41st minute, and Koni De Winter followed him into the referee's notebook in first-half stoppage time.

The Five-Minute Swing

The game finally opened up in the 63rd minute. Luka Modric picked out Rabiot, and the Frenchman finished to give Milan the lead. It looked like the result our pre-match read had pointed toward — Milan were given a 50 percent chance of winning, and with the goal they looked on course to cash in on that.

Five minutes. That's all Sassuolo needed. Cas Odenthal pulled one back in the 68th, unaided, and suddenly the whole complexion of the match changed. El empate, right out of nowhere.

From there, Milan spent the closing stretch chasing a winner they couldn't find. The shots ended level at 11 apiece, but Sassuolo's goalkeeper had already done the hard work. Four yellow cards for Milan across the 90 minutes — Estupiñán, De Winter, Gonçalo Ramos in the 87th, and Strahinja Pavlovic in the first minute of stoppage time — told the story of a side increasingly frustrated. Kristian Thorstvedt got the last booking of the night for Sassuolo deep into added time, but by then the point was already secured.

Where Both Sides Stand

Milan will feel they left something behind. The possession, the corners (5 to 3), the shots on target (6 to 4) — all of it pointed toward three points, and they had the lead to prove it. Blowing a one-goal advantage in five minutes, then collecting four yellows in the process of trying to get it back, is not the kind of evening that builds momentum. Their recent form — a win, two draws, a loss, and another draw — suggests a side that can't quite string it together.

Sassuolo, meanwhile, take a draw from a game they were expected to lose. Their form coming in read DLWDW, and they've now added another point to that patchwork run. Cabal, a draw at home against Milan is not a bad afternoon's work — but with only 41 percent of the ball and their goalkeeper working overtime, they're not going to threaten anyone's top-four ambitions playing like this.

The question now is whether Milan can find any consistency before the calendar turns. A draw against Sassuolo is not a disaster, but it's the kind of result that quietly chips away at a season.
