Real Madridvs
SevillaThere was never really a moment of doubt at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday. Real Madrid were in control from the opening exchanges, and by the time the second half was done, the 73,907 in attendance had seen exactly what they came for: a performance that was efficient, occasionally brilliant, and ultimately decisive.
The match opened cautiously enough, though a double booking in the 23rd minute — Felix Correia for Sevilla, Dean Huijsen for Madrid — signaled that both sides were ready to push. Seven minutes later, the hosts broke through. Arda Güler found the net from an Yan Diomande assist, and the goal had the kind of composed inevitability that tends to follow when Madrid's midfield is moving the ball at pace. El desparpajo de Güler in tight spaces has been a theme all season, and this was another example.
Sevilla barely had time to regroup. In the 37th minute, Jude Bellingham slid a pass through for Kylian Mbappé, who finished cleanly to make it 2-0. Two goals in seven minutes, and the visitors were already in a deep hole heading into the break.
The Penalty Puts It to Bed
The second half started with Sevilla needing something — anything — to stay in the game. They never really got it. Madrid were awarded a penalty in the 63rd minute, and Mbappé stepped up to convert, his second of the night and Madrid's third. A yellow card for Juan Iglesias in the 69th and another for Marc Cucurella in the 73rd added a bit of edge to the final quarter, but the match was already over as a contest.
Sevilla did pull one back in the 80th minute, Manu Bueno finishing from a Lucas Stassin assist to make it 3-1 and give the scoreline a slightly more respectable look. But any notion of a comeback ended almost immediately. Two minutes later, Yan Diomande got on the scoresheet himself — this time as scorer rather than provider — with Aurélien Tchouaméni picking up the assist. Cabal, that was the moment the night was fully wrapped up.
The numbers back up what the eye test suggested. Madrid held 65% of the ball, completed 666 passes at 90% accuracy, and put eight of their 15 shots on target. Sevilla managed 11 shots and five on target, which tells you they weren't completely toothless — but Madrid's goalkeeper was equal to everything that mattered.
Our pre-match read made Real Madrid the clear favorite at 77%, and the result left no room for argument.
For Sevilla, the loss will sting more for how quickly it got away from them. Going into the break two down at the Bernabéu is a difficult position for anyone, and their recent form — two wins coming in — suggested they'd at least make a game of it. They didn't.
For Madrid, the question now is consistency. The Bellingham-to-Mbappé combination is clicking, Güler is making the most of his minutes, and Diomande is contributing on both ends. If that group stays healthy and sharp, this version of Real Madrid is going to be muy difícil to stop as the season deepens.
