There was never much doubt about how this was going to go. Real Madrid at the Bernabéu, 64 percent of the ball, 18 shots, and a Leipzig side that came in with decent form but left looking thoroughly outclassed. Our pre-match read made Madrid the clear favorite at 77 percent, and Wednesday night gave no reason to argue.

The opener came just before the break. Bernardo Silva finished in the 43rd minute — no assist recorded, just a player who found the right space at the right time. It was the kind of goal that doesn't demand a long description: quiet, composed, effective.

The Second Half Settled It

Leipzig needed to come out different after the interval. They didn't. Seven minutes in, Kylian Mbappé slipped a ball through for Arda Güler, and the young Turk made it 2-0 in the 52nd. That, cabal, was the moment the match effectively ended as a contest. Leipzig had shown six shots on target across the full ninety, but the scoreboard was already telling a different story.

The match drifted through a relatively uneventful middle stretch. Álvaro Carreras picked up a yellow in the 68th, Rocco Reitz followed two minutes later for Leipzig. Neither booking changed anything.

Then came the strange final ten minutes.

Mbappé got his own name on the sheet in the 83rd, finishing from a Yan Diomande assist to make it 3-0 and, seemingly, kill any remaining drama. Two minutes later, Tidiam Gomis pulled one back for Leipzig — Christoph Baumgartner with the assist — and for a fleeting moment the Bernabéu stirred slightly. ¡Ala gran púchica!, you think, is this going somewhere? It wasn't. Yan Diomande, who had assisted the third, then scored the fourth in the 87th off a Brahim Díaz ball, and that was that.

Four goals in a five-minute window between the 83rd and 87th minutes is genuinely chaotic on paper. In practice it felt more like garbage time with extra steps.

By the Numbers

  • Madrid: 64.3% possession, 18 shots, 11 on target, 7 corners
  • Leipzig: 35.7% possession, 11 shots, 6 on target, 1 corner
  • Both sides completed passes at 90% accuracy

The one number that stands out for Leipzig is six saves — their goalkeeper was kept busy throughout, and the margin could easily have been wider before those late goals reshuffled the final tally.

Madrid's depth showed here too. Yan Diomande contributing an assist and a goal as what appears to be a rotation option is the kind of thing that gives a squad real Champions League weight. El patojo Güler, meanwhile, continues to look completely at home at this level.

Leipzig will feel the gap between themselves and Europe's top tier is real. They came in with the same DWWLW form as Madrid, which made this look like a competitive fixture on paper. It wasn't. The question now is whether they can salvage something from the group stage, because this result does them no favors.
