Real Betis didn't need to dazzle. They needed one moment of quality, and Isco gave them exactly that — a 59th-minute penalty, coolly dispatched, and suddenly Feyenoord were chasing a game they couldn't quite crack open.

Feyenoord came into La Cartuja de Sevilla with four straight wins behind them and the majority of the ball on the night — 52.7% possession, 572 passes, an equal passing accuracy to their hosts. On paper, a competitive away trip. In practice, their attack never got going. Two shots on target across ninety minutes tells the real story, and Real Betis' goalkeeper was rarely troubled in any meaningful way.

Betis, for their part, were the hungrier side in front of goal. Twenty-three shots, ten on target — they pressed and probed throughout, even while ceding the ball. Feyenoord's keeper was the busiest man on the pitch, finishing with nine saves. That number alone explains why a one-goal margin felt comfortable rather than nervy.

The Turning Point

Mika Mármol picked up a yellow card for Feyenoord in the 14th minute, a warning sign early that the Dutch side would need to be disciplined. Charles Vanhoutte followed him into the book in the 52nd, and seven minutes later Betis had their penalty. Isco stepped up and didn't flinch. 1-0.

From that point, Feyenoord's task became obvious and their execution fell short. They had the ball but couldn't do anything dangerous with it. El peligro de Betis wasn't their possession — it was their shape off the ball, which smothered Feyenoord's attempts to build anything threatening in the final third.

Rodrigo Riquelme picked up a yellow for Betis late on in the 86th minute, a minor blemish on an otherwise disciplined home performance. No red cards on either side. Clean, controlled, and professional.

The Verdict

Our pre-match read had Real Betis as 56% favorites, and cabal, that's exactly how it played out — they won without ever needing to be spectacular. Feyenoord's recent form had earned them respect coming in, but they left Seville with nothing to show for the possession they held.

Betis will feel this was a deserved three points. Their defensive structure was sound, their attack — even if reliant on a penalty — generated far more than the visitors. The question now is whether Feyenoord can fix what looked like a real problem in the final third; four wins in a row hadn't exposed it, but a night in Seville just did.
