RB Leipzigvs
Eintracht FrankfurtSome matches turn in the 70th minute, or hinge on a single decision. This one was over before Frankfurt had touched the ball twice in anger. RB Leipzig dismantled Eintracht Frankfurt 6-0 at Red Bull Arena on Saturday, and the scoreline, uncomfortable as it looks, is an honest reflection of the evening.
Ezechiel Banzuzi opened it in the 1st minute, finishing off a pass from Neil El Aynaoui before Frankfurt had settled into their shape. Four minutes later, Christopher Nkunku made it two, converting a feed from Antonio Nusa. The visitors held more of the ball — 53.5% possession by the final whistle — but possession without penetration is just keeping the other team comfortable, and Frankfurt never found a way through.
El Aynaoui picked up a yellow card in the 27th minute, a brief interruption in what was otherwise a controlled Leipzig performance. Frankfurt threatened enough to force nine saves from the Leipzig goalkeeper, and they put 18 shots on the board themselves, nine on target. The numbers suggest a more competitive game than the scoreline tells. They weren't.
Nkunku Takes Over
If the opening ten minutes were damaging, the final ten of the first half were brutal. Nkunku scored his second in the 41st minute, then turned around and added his third three minutes later in the 44th. Back-to-back goals without an assist credited to either — just a player taking the game by the collar. El qué de Nkunku, the sheer confidence of it, was something to watch. Leipzig went into halftime leading 4-0, and Frankfurt's night was already beyond saving.
Nusa got on the scoresheet in the 54th minute, with Banzuzi returning the assist favor, and the match settled into the kind of second half where the only real drama is how high the number climbs. Frankfurt's frustration showed in the bookings — Elias Baum went into the referee's book in the 62nd minute, Ansgar Knauff in the 76th, Raphael Onyedika in the 84th. Tidiam Gomis wrapped up the scoring in the 89th minute, assisted by Benjamin Henrichs, to make it six.
Our pre-match read had Leipzig as the favorite at 58%, and they vindicated that comfortably — though few would have called the margin.
The raw numbers tell a strange story: Frankfurt outpassed Leipzig (490 to 432) and held the majority of possession, yet Leipzig's 20 shots to Frankfurt's 18 came with far deadlier results. Ten on target, four goals in the final four minutes of the first half alone. Leipzig were clinical in a way that stats about passing accuracy simply can't capture.
For Frankfurt, the form coming in — DWLDW — suggested a team capable of competing. They did not compete here. The question now is whether this is a one-night aberration or a sign that something is genuinely wrong in their defensive structure. Leipzig, meanwhile, will feel this result does a lot of good for their confidence after a mixed run of their own. Nkunku's hat-trick alone gives them something to build on.
