Racing Santandervs
VillarrealRacing Santander did everything right for 44 minutes. Then Villarreal did everything right in two.
The hosts built a 2-0 lead through the first half, looked comfortable doing it, and were seconds from walking into the locker room with a result that would have felt like a genuine statement. Instead, Villarreal scored twice in first-half stoppage time to level at 2-2, and that's how it finished. Our pre-match read had Villarreal as the favorite at 49% — they didn't win, but they'll feel like they rescued something real.
The Lead That Felt Safe
Andrés Martín opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 21st minute, and Racing looked settled from there. They were compact, direct, and content to let Villarreal have the ball — which Villarreal had plenty of, finishing with 58.6% possession and 540 passes to Racing's 382. None of that translated into danger in the first half, though. Sergio Martínez made it 2-0 in the 34th minute with a straightforward finish, and El Sardinero's 22,413 fans were firmly behind their side.
Villarreal had the territory but not the teeth. Their shot-on-target count was just one through the first 44 minutes, and Racing's goalkeeper was barely troubled.
Two Minutes That Changed Everything
Then came the collapse — or the comeback, depending on which bench you were sitting on.
Pape Gueye pulled one back in the 45th minute, set up by Alberto Moleiro, and before Racing could process it, Nicolas Pépé leveled in the 45+1. Georges Mikautadze got the assist. Two goals in two minutes, both from Villarreal's substitutes and depth pieces finding the right moment. ¡Ala gran púchica! — Racing had done the hard part for 44 minutes and had nothing to show for it but a draw.
Gustavo Puerta picked up a yellow card in the ensuing chaos of 45+4, a sign of how frantic the half-time whistle felt for the home side.
Second Half, Same Score
The second half never really found a decisive moment. Villarreal continued to control the ball and generated more danger — seven shots on target for the match compared to Racing's three — but Racing's goalkeeper made five saves across the full 90 and kept the score level. Juan Foyth was booked in the 48th minute for Villarreal, Pape Gueye picked up a second yellow in the 72nd, and Pablo Ramon was carded for Racing in the 75th. Santiago Mouriño and Carlos Romero added late bookings for Villarreal as tempers frayed in the final minutes.
Neither side found a winner.
Verdict
Racing will feel this one. Seventeen shots to Villarreal's twelve, a two-goal lead, and a home crowd — they had the ingredients for three points and ended up with one. Villarreal, on the other hand, will take the point and move on without too much regret. Cabal, that two-minute burst was the entire story of this match. The question now is whether Racing's form — they came in on a strong run of DWDWW — can hold up after a result that should have been more.
