ElcheThere are nights when one player simply takes the match by the collar and refuses to let go. Friday at El Sardinero, that player was Yassir Zabiri — and Elche had no answer for him until it was already too late.
Zabiri opened the scoring in the 15th minute, doubled it six minutes later, and completed his hat-trick in the 36th with an assist from Iñigo Vicente. Three goals, all before the break, all from the same boot. Racing Santander went into halftime 3-0 up against a side that controlled 60 percent of the ball and would finish the night with 18 shots. The numbers make you do a double take, but that's the story: Elche had the game and Racing had the goals.

The Comeback That Wasn't Quite
Elche came out after the break clearly intent on making something of it, and they nearly did. In the 78th minute, Buba Sangaré pulled one back with Lucas Cepeda picking up the assist. Then, just sixty seconds later, Fernando Niño headed home from a José Antonio Morente delivery to make it 3-2. Back-to-back goals, the ground suddenly nervous, Elche scenting something improbable.
But Racing held. The final twelve minutes plus stoppage time didn't produce the equalizer Elche needed, and the three points stayed in Santander.
The bookings told their own subplot. Facundo González and Alvaro Mantilla both picked up yellows for Racing in the dying minutes of the first half — 43rd and 45th minute respectively — which added a layer of tension to a half that was already in the bag scorewise. Facundo Buonanotte was cautioned for Elche in the 63rd, right around the time the visitors were starting to push.
What the Numbers Say
Elche's 60-2 possession share and 18 shots should, in theory, tell the story of a dominant side. Instead they tell the story of a team that had the ball and couldn't do anything with it until the match was already decided. Racing managed just 13 shots, put six on target, and needed only three saves all night. Their 80 percent pass accuracy in a low-possession game suggests they were doing exactly what they intended — compact, direct, clinical.
Cabal, that was the difference between the sides: one team scored when it mattered, the other didn't.
Our pre-match read made Racing Santander the favorite at 49 percent, and the result bore that out cleanly.
Elche will feel the sting of this one. They weren't outplayed for most of the ninety minutes — they were outscored in a fifteen-minute window and couldn't fully undo it despite a brave late push. The question now is whether that second-half fight signals something building, or whether conceding three goals before the interval is simply too steep a hole to dig out of on a regular basis. For Racing, Zabiri's evening puts him firmly at the center of whatever ambitions they're carrying into this LaLiga campaign.
