Osasuna came into this one having won just once in their last five, and you could feel the tension in El Sadar from the opening whistle. Racing Santander, meanwhile, brought more of the ball and a high pass accuracy to match — but none of that possession translated into anything that troubled Osasuna where it counts. Cabal, that gap between looking good with the ball and actually threatening the goal was what decided the afternoon.

The Penalty That Changed Everything

The match turned before it had even found its feet. Álvaro Mantilla picked up a yellow card in the 6th minute, and three minutes later Ante Budimir stepped up from the spot and converted. A 9th-minute penalty is a particular kind of psychological weight — Racing suddenly had to chase the game with 80-plus minutes left and a crowd that had just exhaled.

Racing had the ball for most of what followed. They finished with 56.4% possession and played 425 passes at 90% accuracy — tidy, patient, but ultimately toothless. Their nine shots produced just one on target all match. Osasuna's goalkeeper barely broke a sweat, making only one save. The hosts, by contrast, were direct and physical: 20 shots, 21 fouls, and seven corners, with Valentín Rosier picking up a yellow in the 28th minute as Osasuna pressed their advantage in the only way they know how.

The second half opened with Jorge Salinas booked for Racing in the 51st minute, and Ante Budimir added his own yellow in the 60th — the kind of booking that had Osasuna fans watching their fingers for a moment, given how much he'd already contributed. But the match never really threatened to flip. Racing created little and finished less.

Osambela Seals It

With two minutes left, any lingering doubt disappeared. Asier Osambela found the net in the 88th minute to make it 2-0, and that was that. Racing's goalkeeper had made five saves on the day — which, given how little threat they posed going forward, tells you something about how the second half played out in terms of pressure, even if Osasuna never looked like blowing the doors off.

¡Ala gran púchica! — five saves and still a clean sheet against you. That's a tough afternoon for any side.

Iván Martín collected a late yellow for Racing in the 80th minute, which summed up a frustrated second half for the visitors. They never really found a way through, and by the time Osambela scored, the result had already been written.

Our pre-match read made Osasuna the favorite at 48%, and they left no doubt — the result was exactly what the form suggested.

The question now is whether this win is a turning point or just a temporary exhale for Osasuna. Their last five games had been rough — two draws and three losses — and a 2-0 home result against a Racing side that won only once in five will feel good, but the schedule won't stay this forgiving. For Racing, the concern is simpler and more urgent: one shot on target in a league game is a real problem, no matter how much of the ball you keep.
