Espanyol came to El Sadar and settled the argument before most of the crowd had finished their coffee. Roberto Fernández scored in the 3rd minute and again in the 17th, and that was essentially the match — Osasuna spent the next 73 minutes chasing a game they never looked like catching.

Our pre-match read had Osasuna as the favorites at 42%, but Espanyol didn't seem particularly interested in that framing.

The First Seventeen Minutes Did It

Marcos Fernández set up the opener, Roberto Fernández finishing to make it 1-0 almost immediately. Osasuna barely had time to reset before Espanyol were at them again. Omar El Hilali this time with the assist, Roberto Fernández converting once more in the 17th minute. Two goals, two assists from two different players, and the home side already staring at a deficit they couldn't close.

Qué arranque de partido for Espanyol — ruthless in transition, clinical in the final third, and content to sit back and defend the lead once they had it.

Osasuna's Possession Went Nowhere

The numbers tell a frustrating story for the home side. Osasuna finished with 60.8% of the ball, 492 passes at 80% accuracy, and 11 shots — four on target. Espanyol's goalkeeper made four saves to keep the clean sheet. On the other end, Osasuna's goalkeeper was called into action just once all night.

That gap between controlling the ball and doing something with it was the defining feature of Osasuna's evening. Plenty of passing, not enough penetration. Espanyol, sitting on 39.2% possession and just six shots, were perfectly happy to let Osasuna have the ball in front of them and defend the box.

The bookings added some heat to the final stretch of the first half. Enrique Barja picked up a yellow in the 30th minute for Osasuna, Jon Moncayola followed in the 39th, and Espanyol contributed their own pair — Clemens Riedel in the 40th, Omar El Hilali just before the whistle at the 45th. Roger Hinojo added a late one for the visitors in the 87th, by which point the game was long decided.

The Verdict

Cabal, this was a performance built on efficiency over ambition. Espanyol committed 24 fouls — more than double Osasuna's ten — and leaned on physicality to disrupt the home side's rhythm whenever possession got dangerous. It wasn't pretty, but it worked.

For Osasuna, the form coming in read LLWWD, and this loss does nothing to ease the pressure at El Sadar. Having that much of the ball and converting just four shots on target into zero goals will bother the coaching staff more than the defeat itself. Espanyol, meanwhile, arrive on WDLLW form and will feel this result as a genuine turning point — two wins from their last two, and a clean sheet on the road against a side expected to beat them. The question now is whether they can carry this efficiency into a tougher fixture.
