There are draws that feel earned and draws that feel like a slow leak. Saturday's 0-0 at The City Ground was the second kind. Nottingham Forest and Tottenham spent 90-odd minutes canceling each other out in a match that had the bones of a contest without ever finding the flesh.

Tottenham had the ball — 58.6 percent of it — and the corners (ten to Forest's two), which usually means something. Here it meant very little. They fashioned 12 shots and put exactly zero of them on target. All that possession, all that territory, and the goalkeeper barely had to think. Forest were no more dangerous in the final third: 12 shots as well, two on target, one save required from Tottenham's keeper. The math on both sides is pretty grim.

Forest set up to absorb and counter, which is reasonable given their form coming in — one win in the last five. Forty-one percent possession and 311 passes is not a team trying to play out; it's a team that decided where the game would be fought and held that line. They fouled 22 times to do it, which tells you how physical that commitment was.

The Bookings

The card count was the closest thing to incident all night. Destiny Udogie picked up a yellow in first-half stoppage time — a foul that summed up Tottenham's frustration at the break. Nikola Milenkovic was booked seven minutes into the second half, then James McAtee followed in the 78th as Forest's discipline began to fray. Mateus Fernandes got Tottenham's second yellow in the 84th, and that was that. Four cautions, no red cards, no goals.

Qué partido tan apagado. The atmosphere at The City Ground deserved better from both sides, and 30,686 people will have left knowing they didn't see much worth talking about.

Our pre-match read couldn't separate these two — a dead-even matchup at 36 percent apiece — and it was right to hedge. The game ended exactly as undecided as it looked on paper.

The question now is what either side takes from this. Tottenham's form coming in was W-L-W-L-W — a frustrating pattern of inconsistency — and a draw at The City Ground won't break it one way or the other. They dominated the surface stats and produced nothing, which is a different kind of concern than losing. You can fix a loss. A performance like this, where the ball is yours and the chances don't come, is harder to diagnose.

Forest, for their part, will feel they did the job defensively and ran out of ideas going the other way. Two corners all game. Two shots on target. They kept Tottenham out, which matters, but they're still looking for a win that sticks.

A point each. Neither side will be satisfied.
