The match was effectively over before most of the 52,647 inside St. James' Park had settled into their seats. Two goals in the first seven minutes — both fed by Harvey Barnes — put Newcastle United in a position Hull City spent the next 83 minutes trying, and mostly failing, to claw back from. A 2-1 final scoreline flatters the visitors only slightly.

Joe Willock got things started in the 3rd minute, finishing off a Barnes delivery to put Newcastle ahead almost immediately. The stadium barely had time to react before Lewis Hall made it two in the 7th, again with Barnes pulling the strings. Qué arranque — Hull were shell-shocked, and the tone was set.

Our pre-match read had Newcastle as 60% favorites, and the opening quarter-hour made that look conservative.

Hull Try to Make a Game of It — and Nearly Do

To their credit, Hull City didn't fold. They finished the match with 21 shots — a remarkable number for a team that lost — though only four found the target. Newcastle, by comparison, had 12 shots and five on target. The hosts were efficient where Hull were prolific and ultimately wasteful.

The visitors also picked up bookings at an uncomfortable rate. Matt Crooks went into the referee's book in the 29th minute, Mohamed Belloumi followed in the 39th, and goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis was cautioned in first-half stoppage time. Ryan Giles added a fourth yellow for Hull in the 49th — Jacob Murphy got one for Newcastle right at the whistle before half, but the disciplinary picture told a story of a team pressing and fouling in frustration. Hull committed 10 fouls to Newcastle's four.

The goal that gave Hull a lifeline came in the 67th minute. Mohamed-Ali Cho finished from a Mohamed Belloumi assist — the same Belloumi who'd been booked earlier — and suddenly there were 23 minutes left with a game that felt reopened. Newcastle had 56% of the ball and a 90% pass accuracy all evening, but that goal introduced a tension that hadn't existed since the opening minutes.

It didn't last. Newcastle managed the final stretch without too much alarm, and the three points stayed on Tyneside.

Verdict

Harvey Barnes will get most of the credit for this one, and rightly so — two assists in seven minutes is the kind of output that changes a Saturday. Cabal, that early double is what won Newcastle this match; everything after was consequence.

Hull will feel the sting of their own shot count. Twenty-one attempts and one goal is a conversion rate that loses games, and it lost them this one. Their recent form had shown signs of life — back-to-back wins coming in — but they ran into a Newcastle side that punished them before they could find their footing.

Newcastle, now on a run of four wins from five, look like a team with momentum and a settled shape. The question now is whether they can carry this kind of efficiency into tougher assignments.
