Cagliari arrived at U-Power Stadium riding three straight wins, holding more of the ball and generating more shots. They left with nothing. Monza didn't need to outplay them — they just needed to be clinical at the right moments, and on Monday night, they were exactly that.

The match was effectively decided by halftime plus two minutes. Eddy Kouadio broke the deadlock in the 39th minute, finishing off a Dany Mota assist to give Monza the lead their defensive shape had been quietly earning. Then, barely ninety seconds into the second half, Gustavo Varela doubled it — Manga Foe Ondoa with the supply — and the game's shape changed completely.

Our pre-match read called this one too close to split, and through fifty-five minutes of Cagliari possession and pressure, that looked about right. But football doesn't reward possession without end product, and Cagliari's 16 shots produced only five on target and no goals. Monza's goalkeeper made five saves to keep the sheet clean. That's the story behind the scoreline.

The Varela Show

The third goal, in the 66th minute, was Jay Robinson converting a Varela assist — by that point the Argentine was everywhere, pulling strings and making Cagliari's defenders look like they were guarding shadows. El chispudo de Varela, always one step ahead of the press. He capped his own performance in the 79th minute with a second goal, this one unassisted, to round off a 4-0 result that flatters neither side's stat line but tells the truth about what mattered.

Cagliari finished with 54.7 percent of the ball, seven corners to Monza's two, and a pass accuracy of 90 percent. None of it mattered. Monza, with just 45.3 percent possession and only two corners, scored four times. They had 14 shots to Cagliari's 16, but their six on target were converted at a rate the visitors could not match.

The bookings came late and without consequence — Harry Winks picked up a yellow for Cagliari in the 76th minute, followed by Samuele Birindelli and Alieu Fadera both carded in the 82nd. By then the match was long settled.

For Cagliari, en qué clavo se encontraban — three wins in a row going in, and then this. That form streak is over, and the questions about their finishing will be louder this week than any other. Sixteen shots and a shutout is a damning combination.

Monza, meanwhile, will feel this is a statement result. They absorbed Cagliari's pressure without panic, punished them on the counter, and got a multi-goal performance from Varela at exactly the right moment. The question now is whether they can sustain this kind of efficiency against better opposition — but after a night like this, they've earned the right to ask it.
