Nobody handed Eintracht Frankfurt much of a chance here. Our pre-match read made Mainz the 54% favorite at home, and with good reason — the hosts had won three of their last four. Frankfurt had lost two of their last five and drawn the other two. None of that mattered once Can Uzun got started.

The opener came in the 9th minute, and it set the tone for everything that followed. Uzun got on the end of a Jonathan Burkardt assist and finished cleanly, giving Frankfurt an early lead they would never relinquish. Mainz had the ball for most of the night — 54.7% possession, 477 passes, 19 shots — and still couldn't find a way back. That kind of stat line usually tells a different story. Tonight it just meant the home side was chasing shadows.

Mainz pushed to level things before the break, but it was Frankfurt who struck again. Stoppage time of the first half, Burkardt turned provider into scorer — Jeremiaha Maluze with the assist — and just like that it was 2-0 at the whistle. Qué manera de cerrar el primer tiempo. The crowd at MEWA ARENA had come expecting a home performance; they got a halftime deficit instead.

Uzun Puts It to Bed

Raphael Onyedika had picked up a yellow card in the 41st minute, so Frankfurt carried some risk into the second half. It didn't slow them down. On the hour mark, Uzun completed his brace — Mario Götze with the assist — and that was the match as a contest. Three goals, two from the same man, and Frankfurt had done it with 45.3% of the ball and just 11 shots.

Götze would collect a yellow of his own in the 70th minute, but by then Frankfurt were managing the game comfortably. Mainz's 5 shots on target matched Frankfurt's exactly, but the visitors' goalkeeper made 4 saves to Mainz's 2 — a clean illustration of where the real pressure lived.

Phillip Tietz pulled one back for Mainz in the 89th minute, assisted by Otto Ruoppi, but it was consolation and nothing more. The final scoreline — 3-1 — reads closer than the game felt.

Mainz will feel hard done by the numbers on paper: more possession, more shots, more passes. But football doesn't reward volume without precision, and Frankfurt were ruthlessly precise when it counted. Cabal, that efficiency was the whole story of the night.

The question now is whether Frankfurt can build on this. Two wins in their last five going in, and they produce a performance like this on the road against a team in form. If Uzun keeps finding this kind of finishing touch, they could be a real problem for the top half of the Bundesliga table.
