Some matches take a while to find their shape. This one had its shape by the ninth minute — and then spent the next 80 trying to escape it.

Bayer Leverkusen came to MEWA ARENA and immediately looked like they'd rather just get this over with. Robert Andrich opened it in the 5th minute, and four minutes later Patrik Schick, fed by Aleix García, made it 2-0. At that point, Mainz looked genuinely cooked.

They weren't.

Caci Drags Mainz Back

Anthony Caci had other ideas. The Mainz fullback pulled one back in the 33rd minute, then — with Nadiem Amiri providing the assist — leveled it at 2-2 just before halftime in the 42nd. Qué vuelta tan dramática. A two-goal lead gone in under ten minutes of game time, and suddenly Leverkusen were the ones heading to the dressing room with questions to answer.

Mainz had collected a couple of bookings along the way — Phillip Tietz in the 20th, Sheraldo Becker in the 35th — but the discipline issues didn't slow their momentum in those final minutes of the first half. They were the better side once the game opened up.

Leverkusen Reassert Themselves

The second half, though, belonged to the visitors. Jarell Quansah got his head on one in the 55th minute to restore Leverkusen's lead, and then Moussa Diaby, assisted by Afonso Moreira, made it 4-2 in the 65th. Cabal, that was the moment the match effectively turned back in Leverkusen's favor for good.

Mainz kept pressing — 23 shots on the night to Leverkusen's 16, though only five found the target compared to seven for the visitors. The conversion gap tells the story cleanly. Lee Jae-Sung picked up a yellow in the 76th for his troubles, and Quansah got one of his own deep in stoppage time after a night that started with his header and ended with a booking.

Benedict Hollerbach's 90+2 goal gave the scoreline a more respectable look for the hosts, but Leverkusen were already through the danger by then.

Verdict

Our pre-match read made Bayer Leverkusen the favorite at 42%, and they justified it — though not without a scare. Leverkusen will feel the early blitz should have made this comfortable, and the fact that Caci nearly dragged Mainz to a point will sting a little. The defensive structure that let a 2-0 lead vanish so quickly is a concern worth watching.

For Mainz, there's something to take from this. You don't often see a team claw back a two-goal deficit against Leverkusen, and the second-half push — even if it came too late — showed a squad that doesn't fold. The question now is whether they can build on that fight in the weeks ahead, or whether nights like this stay in the loss column and fade.
