Real Betis came to Lille as the underdog and left with three points and a performance that demanded respect. Our pre-match read made Lille the favorite at 44% — Betis ignored it entirely, controlling possession, generating 20 shots, and finishing with a composure that the hosts simply couldn't match.

Lille looked the part early. Ayase Ueda got his head on an Ethan Mbappé cross in the 12th minute and gave the Stade Pierre Mauroy exactly the start it wanted. For the next twenty minutes, the home side looked comfortable enough.

Then Betis found their rhythm.

Bartra Takes Over

Pablo Fornals picked out Marc Bartra at the back post in the 33rd minute, and the defender's header made it 1-1. Three minutes later, Lille hit back — Gaetan Perrin's delivery found Alexsandro, another header, another goal. Three goals in twenty-four minutes, two of them from center-backs, and the match was alive in the best possible way.

The second half settled things quickly. In the 49th minute, Isco threaded a ball to the back post and Bartra was there again — his second header of the night, his second goal, and suddenly Betis led 2-2 on aggregate. El poderío de Bartra in the air was something else. Four minutes later, Troy Parrott collected a Rodrigo Riquelme pass and finished to make it 3-2. Lille were reeling.

Down to Ten

Then came the moment that killed whatever hope Lille had left. In the 56th minute, Ethan Mbappé — who had set up the opening goal — was shown a straight red card. Lille were down to ten men, protecting a one-goal deficit, with 35 minutes still to play.

The numbers tell the rest of the story. Betis finished with 55.4% possession and 20 shots to Lille's six. The home side managed just two shots on target all evening. Giroud picked up a yellow in stoppage time — a frustrated punctuation mark on a night that had long since slipped away.

Betis' disciplinary record wasn't spotless either: Natan, Facundo Bernal, and Marc Roca all saw yellow in the second half, a sign of how physical the contest got as Lille pushed for a way back in. But the Spanish side never looked like conceding a third.

Cabal, the red card was the turning point — but Betis had already earned the lead on merit before Mbappé walked. The win also fits a team that came in on a four-match winning run and now carries real momentum into the group stage.

The question now is whether Lille can recover quickly. Losing Mbappé to suspension hurts, and their attack — six shots, two on target — looked thin even before going a man down. Betis, meanwhile, will feel this result announces them at this level. Marc Bartra, of all people, as the hero of a Champions League away win. Qué noche.
