Ipswich Townvs
SunderlandFor 89 minutes, Sunderland did everything right. They had the ball, they had the chances, they had the shape. Then Jack Clarke happened.
Clarke's 90th-minute finish, set up by Sasa Lukic, gave Ipswich Town a 2-1 win that will sting Sunderland long after the drive back north. Our pre-match read called this one too close to split — and it was, right up until it wasn't.
The First Half
Ipswich drew first blood in the 24th minute. Julio Enciso found Emersonn, who finished to put the hosts ahead despite having next to nothing in terms of the ball. That stat would define the afternoon: Ipswich ended the match with just 37.5% possession and 325 passes to Sunderland's 549. They were sitting, absorbing, and waiting.
Sunderland responded well. Danny Ballard picked up a yellow card in the 36th minute for his trouble, but three minutes later Nilson Angulo leveled it, scoring without an assist to make it 1-1 going into the break. Cabal, that equalizer felt like the turning point — Sunderland had momentum, the ball, and a full second half ahead of them.
Sunderland Press, Ipswich Hold
The second half told a familiar story for a team with 62.5% possession: lots of passing, not enough product. Sunderland had 11 shots on the day to Ipswich's 10, with four on target to Ipswich's three. The numbers were close enough to make this a coin flip on paper. On the pitch, Sunderland looked the likelier side to nick it.
But the yellow cards kept coming for the visitors. Angulo himself was booked in the 55th minute, then Luke O'Nien followed in the 63rd. Three Sunderland players cautioned across the afternoon — that's a team playing with a certain edge, and not always the controlled kind.
Ipswich, meanwhile, kept their defensive shape. Two saves from the Ipswich goalkeeper, one from Sunderland's — the goalkeepers were hardly overworked, but both were called upon at the right moments.
Clarke Ends It
¡Ala gran púchica! — when the board went up for stoppage time, a point looked like Sunderland's to take. Then Lukic played Clarke in, and Clarke did the rest. Ninety minutes. Game over.
For Ipswich, it's a result that lifts them and keeps their form ticking — WDDWD coming in, and now a win at home to back it up. For Sunderland, the WWDDL run now reads WWDDLL, and the feeling in that dressing room will be that they deserved more. They probably did. Football doesn't always care.
The question now is whether Sunderland can shake this one off quickly. Leaving Portman Road with nothing after controlling so much of the match is the kind of result that can linger. Ipswich, for their part, will take the three points and ask no further questions.
