Hoffenheimvs
Borussia DortmundHoffenheim had it. Two goals up at the break, playing at home, controlling nearly 60 percent of the ball — the PreZero Arena had every reason to feel good about itself heading into the second half. Then Borussia Dortmund remembered who they were.
The first 45 minutes belonged almost entirely to Hoffenheim. They pressed well, moved the ball with purpose, and made Dortmund look disorganized. Leon Avdullahu broke the deadlock right on the stroke of halftime, finishing off an assist from Vladimír Coufal to send the home side in with a lead they had earned. The yellow card Albian Hajdari picked up in stoppage time barely registered — the mood around the stadium was confident.
Nine minutes into the second half, it got better for Hoffenheim. Tim Lemperle doubled the advantage in the 54th minute, converting a pass from Adam Daghim. At 2-0, Dortmund's recent wobble — two straight losses before this trip — looked like it was about to continue.
Then it all unraveled
Serhou Guirassy started it in the 61st minute, finishing from a Waldemar Anton assist to make it 2-1. Just five minutes later, Fábio Silva leveled it at 2-2, with Guirassy turning provider. Two goals in five minutes, and a match that had felt settled was suddenly anything but. Wouter Burger had picked up a yellow in the 63rd minute, right in the middle of Dortmund's surge — Hoffenheim were rattled and the bookings told the story.
Qué locura de segunda mitad. Hoffenheim threw 18 shots at Dortmund's goal across the full 90, dominated corners 10 to 3, and still found themselves chasing the game in the final quarter-hour.
The winner came in the 86th minute, and it was a cruel one for the home side: Albian Hajdari, who had been booked back in first-half stoppage time, turned the ball into his own net to hand Dortmund the lead. There was no coming back from that.
Our pre-match read called this one too close to split, and for a long stretch it looked exactly that way — until Dortmund settled it in the most dramatic fashion possible.
The numbers paint a picture of a game Hoffenheim should not have lost on volume alone. They had more possession, more shots, more corners, and their goalkeeper was only called upon twice. Dortmund's keeper made four saves and their attacking players made four of their 11 shots count. Efficiency won the night.
For Dortmund, this is the kind of result that tells you something about character — down two goals on the road, finding a way. For Hoffenheim, the question now is whether this was a one-off collapse or a sign that their defensive structure cannot hold under real pressure. Given their form — one win in the last three before today — that answer will need to come quickly.
