There are draws that feel like losses, and draws that feel like survival. For Getafe, this was the second kind.

Rayo Vallecano came to the Estadio Coliseum on Monday and dominated almost everything — 68 percent of the ball, 21 shots, a goal inside eleven minutes — and still couldn't close it out against a Getafe side that spent most of the afternoon with ten men. That the hosts left with a point is either a minor miracle or a damning verdict on Rayo's finishing, depending on which side of the stands you were sitting on.

The Red Card That Defined Everything

The match was barely a minute old when Kiko Femenía picked up a yellow, which set an ugly tone. Then Djené went into the book in the 16th minute, and when he collected his second card in the 28th, Getafe were staring down 62-plus minutes a man short with a goal already against them.

Álvaro García had put Rayo ahead in the 11th minute, finishing off a move fed by Jorge de Frutos. It was a clean, well-worked goal, and at that point — with Getafe already rattled and Djené's red still coming — Rayo looked set to run away with it.

They didn't.

Satriano Changes the Story

Getafe came out of the break with something to prove. Francho Serrano, who would pick up a yellow of his own just five minutes into the half, made himself useful in the right way first — his assist in the 56th minute setting up Martín Satriano to level the score. One goal, off a single coherent attacking move, and suddenly the whole shape of the game shifted.

Qué resiliencia de este Getafe — playing with a numerical disadvantage for over an hour and still finding a way back.

Rayo kept pressing. They finished with 21 shots to Getafe's 12, and their 579 passes to Getafe's 257 tells you everything about how lopsided the possession was. But Getafe's goalkeeper made four saves, and the hosts — despite accumulating yellow cards almost compulsively (five on the night, plus the red) — held their shape well enough in the final half-hour.

The bookings kept coming: Dani Carvajal in the 79th, Enes Ünal in the 84th, Nemanja Gudelj in the 87th. Rayo weren't much cleaner by the end, with Pathé Ciss cautioned in the 69th and Sergio Camello in stoppage time. It was that kind of afternoon.

Verdict

Our pre-match read couldn't separate these two — a near-even matchup with no clear favorite — and the 1-1 scoreline is exactly what that called for.

Rayo will feel they left two points in the Coliseum. Twenty-one shots against ten men and only one goal to show for it is a problem their forwards need to answer. For Getafe, the point extends a winless run — their form reads DDLWL coming in — but given the circumstances, their manager will take it. The question now is whether this kind of gritty, undermanned defending can become a foundation, or whether it's just postponing the inevitable slide.
