Racing SantanderFor 80 minutes, Getafe and Racing Santander gave the 7,005 fans inside the Estadio Coliseum very little to cheer about. Then Enes Ünal scored, and that was that.
The Turkish striker's 81st-minute goal was the only clean moment in a match defined more by fouls and yellow cards than by football. Racing Santander had the ball for most of the afternoon — 57 percent possession, 468 passes completed at 80 percent accuracy — and yet they never truly threatened. Three shots on target sounds respectable until you consider that Getafe's keeper made three saves and Racing left without a goal. The visitors created chances; they just couldn't finish any of them.
Getafe, by contrast, were blunt for most of the match. Twelve shots, one on target. They won eight corners and still looked unlikely to score right up until the moment they did. That's the kind of game this was.
Cards Before Goals
The bookings came early and came fast. Jorge Salinas picked up a yellow in the 12th minute for Racing, then Saba Sazonov was carded for Getafe two minutes later, then Alvaro Mantilla joined Salinas in Racing's notebook at the 16th. Three yellows in four minutes — qué forma de empezar — and the referee hadn't even warmed up properly. Manu added a fourth for Racing in the 66th, leaving them walking a tighter line in the final stretch.
That disciplinary edge matters. Racing finished with 17 fouls to Getafe's 14, and with four yellows accumulated, they were always going to be a little cautious in the challenges they could make late on. Whether that caution opened the door for Ünal is hard to say with certainty, but it certainly didn't help Racing close it.
The Only Goal That Mattered
Ünal's finish in the 81st minute was unassisted in the data, meaning he made it himself — and given the context of the match, that tracks. Getafe needed someone to do something individual, and he did it. The goal came against the run of possession, which is almost a Getafe signature at this point.
Our pre-match read made Getafe the favorite at 41 percent, and that is exactly how it played out — the read was right, even if it took until the dying stages to confirm it.
Racing Santander will feel hard done by. They had the better of the ball and their shot count, while modest, at least showed more efficiency than Getafe's. But efficiency in the final third is meaningless if none of it goes in, and none of it did.
Getafe move to a strong position in their early-season form — this result keeps the wins coming. Racing, meanwhile, had looked like they were building something over their last few fixtures, and a loss here stings a bit. The question now is whether they can recover their momentum without letting this one linger.
