Elchevs
Celta VigoThere are draws that feel earned and draws that feel stolen. This one, in front of 25,470 at Estadio Martínez Valero, felt more like the latter — Elche did most of the work and had nothing to show for it, while Celta Vigo rode out the storm, collected their point, and will board the bus north without too many complaints.
Elche controlled this match from the opening whistle. Two-thirds of the possession, 653 passes at 90% accuracy, 13 shots to Celta's seven. On paper, that's dominance. On the scoreboard, it was nothing, because only two of those 13 shots found the goalkeeper and Celta's keeper was never seriously tested — two saves, both routine enough that they don't appear to have caused anyone much stress.
Celta, for their part, barely threatened. Seven shots, none on target, three offsides. They were compact and disruptive, racking up 21 fouls to Elche's 19, which tells you everything about how they planned to spend the evening. El plan de Celta: make it ugly, make it uncomfortable, and get out with a point.
Celta's Discipline Frays, but It Doesn't Cost Them
The bookings came in waves for the visitors. Yoel Lago went into the referee's notebook in the 37th minute, then Javi Rueda followed in the 59th, and Aleix Febas picked up a yellow in the 81st. Three Celta players cautioned, all in the second half's orbit — a sign of how much pressure Elche were applying and how hard Celta were working to keep them out. Marc Aguado got one for Elche in stoppage time, the kind of late yellow that changes nothing.
But three yellows and no red cards meant Celta never had to play with a disadvantage, and Elche couldn't find the breakthrough even at full strength against eleven men. That's the damning part for the home side.
Our pre-match read had Celta Vigo as the favorite at 40% — and instead both teams walked away with a draw neither of them will love for long. Celta came in as the side expected to win and settled for less. Elche, who were supposed to be the underdogs, had the better of the play and still couldn't force the issue.
The question now is what Elche do with this. Their form reads DWLDL heading in, and a home draw against a side that barely created anything will sting. They had the territory, the touches, the corners — five to Celta's two — and two shots on target to show for sixty-six percent of the ball. That conversion rate isn't sustainable if they want to climb the table.
Celta's DWLDD run continues, which is functional but hardly inspiring. They'll take the point, given they were barely in the match offensively, but three cautions from a disciplinary standpoint is something their coaching staff will want to address before next week.
A forgettable Sunday in Elche. Both clubs will want to forget it quickly.
