Brentford led at halftime, ended the match with nine men, and still made Liverpool work for it. That's the story from Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, where a scrappy, combustible Premier League afternoon eventually bent toward the visitors — but not without a fight.

The Lead That Didn't Last

For 44 minutes, Brentford looked like a side with a plan. Igor Thiago found Keane Lewis-Potter at the back post, and Lewis-Potter's header gave the home side something to protect going into the break. It was deserved, too — Brentford were compact, Liverpool hadn't yet imposed their 60-percent possession on the scoreline, and the Gtech was alive.

Then the whole thing unraveled in stoppage time. Yehor Yarmoliuk picked up a red card in the 45th-plus-eighth minute, and suddenly Brentford were walking into the second half a man down, protecting a one-goal lead against a side that had managed 21 shots on the afternoon.

Liverpool Turn the Screw

The second half was messy before it got decisive. Cards flew — Igor Thiago booked in the 46th, Jérémy Jacquet in the 49th, Alexis Mac Allister in the 53rd, Kevin Schade in the 60th — and neither side looked entirely in control of its discipline. Brentford dug in. Liverpool kept pressing.

The equalizer came in the 62nd minute. Florian Wirtz slid the ball through to Víctor Muñoz, who finished to level it. Eight minutes later, el chispudo de Alexander Isak did what he does — Bradley Barcola, who had been booked in the 31st, turned provider, and Isak converted to put Liverpool in front. Cabal, that was the match decided.

Vitaly Janelt, already on a yellow from the 63rd minute, was shown a second in stoppage time to leave Brentford with nine men and the result beyond any doubt.

By the Numbers

The stats tell a familiar story when Liverpool have the ball:

  • Possession: Liverpool 59.9%, Brentford 40.1%
  • Shots: Liverpool 21, Brentford 10
  • Shots on target: Liverpool 5, Brentford 2
  • Corners: Liverpool 9, Brentford 3

Brentford's goalkeeper made three saves to Liverpool's one — and for long stretches, that ratio felt right. The Bees were always chasing the game once Yarmoliuk walked.

Our pre-match read called this one too close to split, and through 44 minutes it looked exactly that way. Liverpool settled it in the end, but the margin of control was never as comfortable as the final scoreline suggests.

Verdict

Liverpool will take the three points and move on, though the volume of yellows — four in the second half alone — will give their coaching staff something to address. For Brentford, the form line of DWWDD suggested a side finding its footing; this loss, and the manner of it, will sting. Two red cards in one match is a clavo you can't afford in the Premier League, and Thomas Frank's side now faces the week knowing they handed Liverpool a route back into a game they were winning.
