Bosnia-Herzegovinavs
QatarSome wins are close until they aren't. Bosnia-Herzegovina spent the first half building a two-goal lead almost by accident — a clean finish, then an own goal — and even when Qatar pulled one back before the break, the Bosnians had enough left to settle it in the 80th minute. Our pre-match read made Bosnia-Herzegovina the favorite at 67%, and they left no real reason to argue with that.
The opener came from Kerim Alajbegovic in the 29th minute, set up by Ivan Basic. Nothing too complicated — a move that worked, finished well. Five minutes later the lead doubled when Mahmoud Abunada turned the ball into his own net, and suddenly Bosnia-Herzegovina were sitting very comfortably with a half still to play.
Qatar did get one back. Hassan Al-Haydos converted in the 42nd minute, assisted by Edmílson Junior, and for a moment the match had a pulse again. Going into halftime at 2-1 instead of 2-0 is the kind of thing that can shift a dressing room's mood. Bosnia-Herzegovina came back out and played like it hadn't shifted theirs at all.
The Match Dies in the 80th
The game stayed at 2-1 longer than Bosnia-Herzegovina probably wanted, Qatar pressing to find an equalizer and picking up 14 fouls along the way — five more than their opponents. Ahmed Fathy was booked in the 78th minute as the tension crept up.
Then Ermin Mahmic ended it. Assisted by Dennis Hadzikadunic, he put the third past the Qatar keeper in the 80th minute. Cabal, that was the moment any remaining doubt disappeared. Mahmic picked up a yellow card two minutes later — the kind of booking that comes with the adrenaline of a big goal — but by then it was a footnote.
The numbers back up what the scoreline says. Bosnia-Herzegovina held 54.5% of the ball, put 14 shots up against Qatar's nine, and their goalkeeper was only called on to make two saves. Qatar's keeper was busier with three. Neither side was wasteful in possession — both finished with 90% pass accuracy — but Bosnia-Herzegovina used theirs to hurt.
Key numbers:
- Bosnia-Herzegovina shots: 14 (5 on target)
- Qatar shots: 9 (3 on target)
- Bosnia-Herzegovina possession: 54.5%
- Qatar fouls: 14
Qatar came into this one with a recent run of two losses, two draws, and another loss. El chispudo de Al-Haydos gave them a lifeline for about 38 minutes, but one good moment from a player of his quality wasn't going to be enough against a side this organized.
Bosnian fans will feel good about this. Three goals, a clean performance in the second half, and the kind of controlled win that suggests a team that knows what it's doing at this level. The question now is whether they can carry this into their next fixture — because this, against a struggling Qatar side, was the kind of game they were supposed to win.
