Bolognavs
SassuoloBologna had 61 percent of the ball, 21 shots, and ten corners. They still needed a stoppage-time equalizer to avoid losing at home to a Sassuolo side that came to defend and counter, and did it rather well for 89 minutes.
The night started quietly enough. Sassuolo were content to sit deep and let Bologna have the ball, and for the first quarter-hour it looked like a game waiting for something to happen. Then Josh Doig gave them something — a goal on 19 minutes that put the visitors ahead and forced Bologna to actually solve a problem instead of just circling it.
They didn't solve it before halftime. Bologna kept the ball, kept knocking, but Sassuolo's shape held. The numbers flattered the hosts; the scoreboard didn't.
The Second Half Turned Ugly, Fast
Roberto Piccoli leveled things up just five minutes after the restart, heading home a Juan Miranda cross on 50 minutes. For a moment it felt like Bologna were about to take over the match entirely. Instead, the next six minutes produced three yellow cards and a sucker punch.
Emil Holm was booked on 51 minutes. Piccoli, fresh off the equalizer, picked up his own yellow on 53. Then Sassuolo's Jay Idzes was cautioned on 54. The tempo was frantic, the fouls were piling up — and right in the middle of all that chaos, Vasilije Adzic put Sassuolo back in front on 56 minutes. Qué manera de golpear, catching Bologna while they were still sorting themselves out.
From there, Sassuolo did what they'd done all night: defend, stay organized, and make Bologna work for every inch. The hosts had the possession (554 passes at 90 percent accuracy), the corners, and the desperation. Sassuolo had the lead and the discipline to protect it.
For most of the second half, it looked like that discipline would be enough.
Dovbyk Won't Let It End That Way
Then came the 90th minute, plus one. Artem Dovbyk forced in an equalizer — and immediately picked up a yellow card for his celebration, which felt like the most Bologna thing that could possibly happen. The goal stood. The card stayed. The final whistle followed shortly after: 2-2.
Our pre-match read had Bologna as 49 percent favorites to win this one, and the draw will sting them more than it does Sassuolo. The hosts dominated the surface stats — more shots, more possession, more of everything — but converted just five of 21 attempts on target and spent large portions of the second half chasing a goal they nearly didn't get.
Sassuolo, sitting on a form run of four wins and a draw in their last five, will take the point and move on without much complaint. For Bologna, the question is whether a performance like this — so much control, so little to show for it — is a one-off or a pattern. Their form reads DLLDW coming in, and drawing at home to a side you were heavily favored to beat doesn't change that story.
