Arsenal came to Munich with the ball, the plan, and — for most of the night — the composure to back it up. They left with a point instead of three, but given how the second half unfolded, they'll take it.

The Gunners controlled possession from the first whistle, finishing the night at 53.9 percent across 502 passes, and it was that patience that opened the scoring. Martin Ødegaard threaded through an assist in the 25th minute for Eberechi Eze, who finished cleanly to give Arsenal the lead they had been building toward. It felt like the natural result of what they'd been doing.

Bayern hit back ten minutes later. Alphonso Davies got on the end of a Harry Kane pass in the 35th minute to level it — a goal that came somewhat against the run of play, Bayern having only 46.1 percent of the ball at that point, but that's the kind of squad that doesn't need permission to score.

The Cards and the Penalty

Arsenal had already been walking a line before the break. Kai Havertz picked up a yellow in the 13th minute, and Ezri Konsa followed him into the book in the 39th. Two cautions before halftime on the road in the Champions League is a clavo you don't want to carry into the second 45.

Bayern made them pay for it. A penalty was awarded in the 61st minute, and Kane stepped up and converted — no drama, no hesitation. Bayern 2, Arsenal 1, and the match looked to be settling into a familiar script: the home side absorbing pressure and protecting a lead.

But Arsenal weren't done. Viktor Gyökeres — who has looked every bit the big signing since arriving — set up Declan Rice in the 82nd minute, and Rice drove it home to make it 2-2. ¡Ala gran púchica! what a moment to pick. The equalizer came with just enough time left that Bayern had to hold on rather than hunt for a winner.

What the Numbers Say

Both teams managed 14 and 13 shots respectively, with five on target each and three saves apiece — a symmetry that tells you neither goalkeeper was asked to do anything outrageous, and that both defenses, when they needed to, held firm enough. Bayern committed 15 fouls to Arsenal's six, which partly explains how the visitors were able to keep the ball and dictate tempo for stretches.

Our pre-match read couldn't separate these two sides — a near-even matchup at roughly 40/35 in favor of Bayern — and cabal, it ended exactly as murky as advertised.

Bayern will look at their recent form — three draws before this — and wonder when the wins start coming with any regularity. Arsenal, for their part, showed enough to believe they belong in this conversation, even if the penalty came at the worst possible moment. The question now is whether either side has the consistency to make this point count when the group standings tighten. Based on tonight, the gap between them is smaller than Munich's home record would suggest.
