Atlético Madridvs
Manchester UnitedSome nights you know early. At the Estadio Metropolitano on Tuesday, it took exactly one minute.
Pablo Barrios, picking up a pass from Álex Baena, put Atlético Madrid ahead before most of the away end had settled into their seats. Manchester United had barely touched the ball. The tone was set, and it never really shifted.
Our pre-match read made Atlético Madrid the favorite at 52%, and the result bore that out without much drama.
The Match Died at 74'
United actually hung around longer than that opening minute suggested they might. With 42% of the ball they still managed nine shots — four on target — and for stretches of the second half they looked capable of finding a way back. Then Leny Yoro picked up a red card in the 74th minute, and whatever slim hope United were carrying walked off the pitch with him.
Six minutes after Yoro's dismissal, Ademola Lookman made it 2-0. No assist recorded, no debate needed — Atlético had the man advantage and they used it cleanly. The Metropolitano breathed out.
Marcus Rashford had already been booked in the 52nd minute, so United spent the final quarter of the match down to ten men and nursing a yellow card on one of their key attackers. Cabal, that combination made any kind of comeback fantasy.
The Numbers
Atlético controlled the night in the ways that matter. They finished with 57.8% possession and 651 passes at 90% accuracy — not a team sitting back and absorbing, but one that held the tempo and dictated terms. United's 466 passes at the same accuracy rate tells you they could move the ball when they had it; they just didn't have it often enough.
El buen trabajo de Barrios in the opening minute forced United into a reactive posture they never escaped. Five corners for United versus two for Atlético might suggest the visitors pushed forward more than the scoreline implies, but those corners came against a defense that had already made its point.
Robin Le Normand picked up a late yellow in the 88th minute — the only blemish on an otherwise controlled Atlético performance.
Verdict
For Manchester United, this is a result that stings beyond the scoreline. Their form coming in — two draws, two losses, one win — suggested a side still finding itself, and a 1' concession at a venue like the Metropolitano is exactly the kind of wound that reopens doubt. The question now is whether the red card on Yoro carries a suspension into their next fixture, which would compound the damage considerably.
Atlético, meanwhile, look very much at home in this competition. Barrios's early strike, Baena's vision to find him, and Lookman's clinical finish in the second half — that's a team playing with confidence. Four wins in their last five across all competitions. The Metropolitano faithful will have left satisfied.
United will feel they were in this longer than the scoreline suggests. They weren't wrong. But ¡Ala gran púchica!, a minute-one deficit followed by a red card in the 74th is not a story with many happy endings.
