Atalantavs
VeneziaSome matches are decided by momentum. This one was decided by the sixth minute.
Atlanta came out of the blocks with a ferocity that Venezia simply had no answer for. Franck Kessié opened the scoring in the 4th minute, finishing off a move that Nikola Krstovic had helped build. Two minutes later, Krstovic turned provider into scorer — meeting an Eljif Elmas delivery with a header to make it 2-0. The New Balance Arena hadn't even warmed up and the match was already over as a real contest.
Venezia would go on to control 63.9 percent of possession and complete 580 passes at 90 percent accuracy. None of that mattered much once Atalanta had sprinted into a two-goal lead and settled into a low block. The hosts sat, hit on the counter, and waited.
They didn't have to wait long for the third.
Krstovic Puts the Stamp On It
In the 30th minute, Krstovic grabbed his second of the night — a straightforward finish that made it 3-0 and formally ended any suspense Venezia might have been clinging to. En qué clavo se encontraba Venezia: 63 percent of the ball, and down three going into the final stretch of the first half.
They did pull one back. Antoine Hainaut headed home a Richie Sagrado delivery in the 37th minute, and for a brief window it looked like Venezia might at least carry some life into halftime. They didn't. Matías Moreno had already picked up a yellow in the 18th minute; Juan Jesus followed him into the book in the 42nd. The visitors were fraying.
Atlanta finished the half with 22 shots to Venezia's 19, despite spending most of the half without the ball. The difference was conversion — 11 shots on target for the hosts, just four for Venezia, who needed seven saves from Atalanta's goalkeeper to keep the scoreline respectable.
The Long Second Half
With a three-goal cushion, Atalanta had no need to press. Venezia kept moving the ball — 580 passes is a big number — but they couldn't find a way through in any meaningful way. The hosts were content to absorb, pick their moments, and run the clock.
The only real drama came in the 89th minute, when Eljif Elmas picked up a red card. Harsh timing, given he'd assisted the second goal and had a hand in shaping the early onslaught, but it won't change the result.
Our pre-match read made Atalanta the favorite at 61 percent, and it held exactly as advertised — the Bergamo side were never seriously threatened once Krstovic had done his damage before the half-hour mark.
Venezia's form coming in — four straight losses — tells its own story, and nothing here changes it. Cabal, this is a side that is running out of answers. For Atalanta, a convincing home win after a rough run of their own (one win in their last five before tonight) will feel like a reset. The question now is whether they can carry this kind of edge into their next fixture, or whether the opener against Venezia just caught a team at exactly the right moment.
