There's a version of Saturday night where Atalanta's numbers tell the story — 22 shots, 61.6% possession, 696 passes at 90% accuracy — and they win comfortably. That version didn't happen. Instead, Cagliari came to New Balance Arena, took five shots, put every single one on target, and left with a 2-1 win that nobody in the pre-match read had penciled in.

Our pre-match read made Atalanta the favorite at 56%, and it's not hard to see why. But Cagliari, riding into this one with three wins from their last five, had other ideas.

The Opening Blow

It was Cagliari who drew first blood. On 19 minutes, Michel Adopo found Paul Mendy, and Mendy did the rest — a clean finish that gave the visitors exactly the platform their defensive game plan needed. From that point, Atalanta had the ball and Cagliari had the lead, which is a fine arrangement if you can hold it.

For a while, they couldn't. Gianluca Scamacca pulled Atalanta level just before halftime, Charles De Ketelaere teeing him up in the 41st minute for the kind of finish that looked like it might finally ignite the home side. Going into the break level, with all that possession and all those chances still in theory ahead of them, Atalanta will have felt the second half was theirs to take.

Daniel Maldini Settles It

El momento clave came early in the second half. A penalty on 61 minutes, and Daniel Maldini stepped up and converted without hesitation. Just like that, Cagliari were back in front — and this time, they didn't let go.

Atalanta kept pressing. Three corners, 22 shots in total. Only four of those shots found the frame, which is cabal, the number that explains everything. Cagliari's goalkeeper made three saves and that was enough. On the other end, Atalanta's keeper also made three stops from just five attempts — every one of Cagliari's shots forced a decision.

No red cards, no chaos. Just a well-drilled Cagliari side doing what compact, counter-minded teams dream of doing against bigger opponents.

Verdict

Atalanta will feel the hurt of this one for a while. That shot-to-target ratio — 4 from 22 — is the damning line in the ledger, and it raises real questions about the quality of the chances they were generating versus the volume. Possession and passing numbers this good should produce more than a single goal.

For Cagliari, this looks like a statement result. A road win against a side with Atalanta's pedigree, manufactured almost entirely through defensive discipline and clinical finishing, is the kind of performance that can shift a team's confidence for weeks. The question now is whether they can sustain it — their form has been streaky — but on this night, they were the better side where it counted most.
