Alavés did everything but win. Eighteen shots, seven corners, nearly all the pressure — and for 88 minutes, none of it mattered because Adrián Niño had put Málaga ahead just before halftime and the visitors had no intention of letting go.

Then Aitor Mañas equalized in the 89th, the stadium exhaled, and the final whistle confirmed what both benches probably already felt: a draw that left everyone a little unsatisfied.

Our pre-match read had Alavés as the clear favorite at 59%, and on paper, the performance backed that up. But football doesn't grade on effort.

The Goal That Changed the Afternoon

For much of the first half, Alavés were the busier side. Then, right at the edge of halftime, Málaga made them pay. Ramón Enríquez found Adrián Niño, and Niño finished to send the visitors into the break ahead. It was Málaga's first real moment of danger, and they converted it. Cabal, that's the kind of efficiency that wins points on the road.

Lucas Boyé had already picked up a yellow card five minutes earlier, which added a layer of tension to Alavés's second-half approach. They needed to push, but they couldn't afford to lose anyone.

18 Shots and a Long Wait

The second half became a siege. Alavés kept coming — 18 shots total on the night, though only four found the target. Málaga's goalkeeper made three saves, enough to keep the lead intact deep into the second half. Nahuel Tenaglia was booked in the 67th, and Málaga's Carlos Dotor followed in the 84th as the game grew scrappy.

Then Mañas. The 89th-minute equalizer was the release valve this match needed, even if it came almost too late to mean anything more than a point.

What It Means

Neither club is in great form. Alavés came in with a DLLDL run; Málaga, not much better at DLDLL. A draw feels like the honest result for two sides that haven't been able to string wins together.

El problema de Alavés is volume without sharpness — 18 attempts and four on target tells the story of a team that's creating chances but not the right ones. Málaga, for their part, had just seven shots and still nearly left Vitoria with three points. That's the part their manager will feel good about, even if the late concession stings.

The question now is whether either side can find any consistency. Alavés will feel they deserved more tonight. Málaga will feel they nearly stole it. Somewhere in that gap is exactly why both clubs sit where they do in the table.
